Technical Blog / Nuvoton development platform Golden three steps: Exclusive visualized pin status inspection tool, PinView

Nuvoton's NuTool - PinView is a visualized pin status inspection tool. When programs are running or debugging, it can display the pin's I/O device's status intuitively and give warnings for some of the more common pin errors. NuTool - PinView can be run as an independent program or can be started as a plug-in program of Keil or IAR. When ran as an independent program, it can be used to "view" the pin statuses of the chip without interrupting the programs in the chip, and File → Run Script in the menu can be used to load customized lua scripts of users or read and write to the memory of the chip or the values of the registers. When ran as a plug-in program of Keil or IAR, it can be started with the integrated debugging environment and reflect the pins' changes after each step of debugging in real-time. When programs are running, the PinView window can update the pins periodically according to the refresh frequency set. NuTool - PinView has obtained international patents, making Nuvoton

Technical Blog / Nuvoton battery management system solution

Lithium ion batteries can be categorized into three types according to the application scenario: “Power”, “Commercial” and “Industrial and Energy Storage”. Even though the growth of traditional electronic products that use lithium ion batteries is slowing, such as smartphones, notebook computers and digital products, the demand for lithium ion batteries has increased in recent years by many innovative emerging industries such as power tools, VR glasses, drones and wearable devices. The key applications of lithium ion batteries will mainly be for fields such as power tools. Since the materialistic properties of a lithium ion battery made it so that it cannot be overcharged, over-discharged, over-current, short-circuit and charged/discharged in extremely high temperatures, and due to the limited capacity density in a single lithium battery, several lithium batteries usually have to be connected in serial or parallel for use according to different application scenarios.

Smart battery management system

The solution is an electronic device capable of monitoring and managing the battery, using an intelligent protection board based on the microcontroller, which has the advantages of convenient parameter adjustment, high flexibility, and better functional design. The number of batteries for CPB usually does not exceed 20; the protection board can be categorized as pure hardware or MCU-based smart lithium battery protection boards. Compared to pure hardware, the adjustment of MCU-based smart protection board parameters is easier, more flexible, and has better function designs to satisfy customer needs. The composition of the conventional smart battery protection board is as shown in the figure below: As for the diversified needs of CPB, Nuvoton’s high-performance NuMicro MCU provides: 5V working voltage is supported for the I/O, and expanded selection range of peripheral analog devices to effectively lower cost for the customers multi-channel high-speed 12-bit ADC to respond to instant
