In Embedded World 2022, Nuvoton will demonstrate solutions for industrial control, IoT security, human-machine interface, and automotive applications. Those up-to-date solutions are based on Nuvoton NuMicro® series microcontrollers and microprocessors, including but not limited to the MA35D1 IIoT Gateway MPU, M2354 IoT Security MCU, M254/256/258 Low Power Touch Key/LCD MCU, M453 Industrial Control MCU, and M0A23 automotive MCU series.
Industrial Control on IIoT Gateway, BMS, and Cold Chain
The NuMicro MA35D1, one of the significant launches in 2022, is a heterogeneous multi-core microprocessor based on dual 64-bit Arm Cortex-A35 cores and one Arm Cortex-M4 real-time core. The high-performance cores, advanced isolated security engine, multiple high-speed connectivity, and rich peripheral make MA35D1 an excellent choice for industrial control.
Besides the new Cortex-A35 microprocessor, Nuvoton provides different products for more industrial control solutions. In Embedded World 2022, Nuvoton showcases another two solutions based on NuMicro M254/256/258 series for cold chain data logger and the M453 series with battery monitoring IC for the Battery Management System (BMS). The cold chain data logger is powered by the NuMicro M254/256/258 series with the Cortex-M23 core. The cold chain data logger could be realized with features of low power, touch key, LCD driver, and full-speed USB. With the PDF file generated function provided, it can automatically create a can-not-be-altered PDF data log file for the asset tracking. Another highlighted solution is the battery management system (BMS), which incorporates the NuMicro M453 CAN series based on Cortex-M4 core and the high-accuracy battery monitoring IC KA49517A/522A to provide the battery management solution for the energy storage, eBike, and other battery applications.
IoT Security MCU applied on the media streaming DRM
IoT security has been one of the main issues in the IoT trend. And Nuvoton debuts the brand new NuMicro M2354 IoT security microcontroller series to inherit the security features of the NuMicro M2351 series that have been Arm PSA Certified™ Level 1, Level 2, and PSA Functional API certified. The M2354 series endows the microcontrollers used network-connected devices with the physical level (chip-level) security protection function.
The smart sound box utilizes the TrustZone architecture to secure legal access to media streaming. In addition, the M2354 series supports DTS Play-Fi® technology on a wireless speaker with Google Cast service authentication.
Human-Machine Interface (HMI)
Nuvoton presents three HMI solutions. All of them are powered by the brand-new MA35D1 microprocessor. For better user experience in graphics HMI, the MA35D1 builds in an LCD interface up to 1080P resolution. It also incorporates a 2D graphics engine, JPEG decoder, and H.264 decoder to enhance graphics and video decoding performance and provide high-efficiency GUIs drawing in the high-resolution display.
These HMI solutions show various features of MA35D1. In addition to the LCD, 2D graphics, and video decoders for the HMI display, there are other Gigabit Ethernet, CAN FD, UART, I2S, SD, and USB host/client connectivity interfaces providing high-speed connectivity and connected to other communication devices.
Automotive MCU on the automotive data logger
The NuMicro M0A23 microcontroller realizes the automotive data logger. The M0A23 features up to 125℃ operating temperature and AEC-Q100 Grade 1 certification. In addition, it supports CAN Bus to log On-Board Diagnostics-II (OBD-II) data, including vehicle speed, engine RPM, engine coolant temperature, MAF air flowrate, throttle position from the engine control unit (ECU) simulator, etc.
Besides the NuMicro microcontrollers/microprocessors-based solutions, Nuvoton provides a comprehensive development platform, NuTools, to assist our customers in achieving rapid development, high-capacity mass production, and easy upgrade. Hsinchu, Taiwan – 2022/05/26 - Nuvoton NuMicro® HMI platform supports multiple graphics libraries, such as LVGL, emWin, and Qt, and includes a versatile NuMaker-HMI-N9H30 evaluation board (EVB) which has passed the LVGL board's certification. The certified board can support LVGL's rich widgets and features, such as animation, anti-aliasing, transparent, smooth sliding, and multiple layer alpha blending. It helps users build up dynamic GUI effects easily and provides another option in GUI development.
The LVGL is an open-source, lightweight graphics library. Nuvoton NuMicro HMI platform's microcontrollers (MCU) and microprocessors (MPU) provide sufficient hardware resources to unleash LVGL's dynamic effects, bringing better user experiences to the embedded GUI. The NuMaker-HMI-N9H30 EVB provides rich peripherals and interfaces, including a 7” 800x480 TFT-LCD, two sets of 10/100 Ethernet, 1 set of USB 2.0 high-speed host, one set of USB 2.0 high-speed device, one set of CAN 2.0B, two sets of RS-232, one set of RS-485, seven sets of UART, and external Flash supporting the Micro-SD/TF card, 32 MB SPI-NOR and the 128 MB NAND. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are becoming more and more popular to achieve carbon neutrality worldwide. Automakers are encouraged to ensure safety against hazardous events such as lithium-ion batteries catching fire and emitting fumes. The cruising range per charge of BEVs must be extended equivalent to a single fueling of internal combustion engine vehicle. Lithium-ion batteries have various battery chemistries such as NMC[1], LiFePO4[2], and LTO[3], depending on the materials used for the positive electrode and negative electrode. A battery monitoring IC can measure a wider voltage in wide temperatures is required to select the optimum battery according to the application for considering of energy efficiency, safety and cost. Automakers are required to install a large-capacity, high-output lithium-ion battery in a small space of BEVs and HEVs.
Our new BM-ICs can detect a wide range of battery cell abnormalities and BMS failures with a redundant measurement system consisting duplicates of the battery cell input terminal, multiplexer, and AD converter in a single IC. It is equipped with a daisy communication function that is more robust than conventional products. This will enable automakers and battery module manufacturers to easily develop and design battery systems that comply with ISO26262 ASIL-D requirements. The new devices with a high precision voltage measurement error of 1.5 mV, help to extend the cruising range of BEVs, and support wide input voltage range thereby maximizes the performance of lithium-ion batteries; and enable to deploy a common platform for various vehicle models and applications. In addition, the new products measure up to 20 connected battery cells in series, which have been well-established from the previous generation. As a result, BMS can be configured with smaller number of components for a high-voltage battery system with many battery cells connected in series, contributing to the miniaturization of the battery module.

[1] NMC (Lithium nickel manganese cobalt oxide):
Batteries that use NMC (a compound that consists of Nickel, Manganese, and Cobalt) for the positive electrode with a low calorific value, excellent discharge characteristics at low temperatures, and a high energy density, used in medical equipment and electric vehicles.
[2] LiFePO4 (lithium iron phosphate):
Batteries that use phosphoric acid for the positive electrode. It is highly safe because thermal runaway rarely happens, and the raw material cost is relatively low. It is used in electric tools and electric vehicles.
[3] LTO (lithium-titanate-oxide):
Batteries that use LTO instead of graphite for the negative electrode material. The voltage is low and the capacity is small, but the thermal stability is high and the cycle characteristics are appropriate.
[4] SOI (Silicon on Insulator) process:
The elements are separated by an insulator (SiO2 layer). The electrical separation between the elements is separated by a PN junction in conventional process.

M2354 Series supports the high-security requirement of IoT devices with outstandingly low power performance. The embedded 1 Mbytes Flash and 256 Kbytes SRAM memory facilitate Multi-RTOS running on connected IoT devices, being easily massively deployed in the IoT environment targeted for high security, low power with a wide range of software resources supported.
M2354 Series inherits the security features of the M2351 series that has been PSA Certified Level 1, Level 2, and PSA Functional API Certified. In parallel, the M2354 series can operate up to 96 MHz, and the 1 Mbytes Flash memory can support secure firmware over-the-air (OTA) updates easily. M2354 series has excellent low power performance with multiple power management modes and operating modes' flexibility. Normal Run mode consumes 89.3 μA/MHz with LDO power supply and 39.6 μA/MHz with DC-DC power supply; less than 2 μA in Standby Power-Down mode. It is 0.5 μA for 80-bytes content retention of RTC registers in Deep Power-Down mode with VBAT power supply. It can further down to 0.1 μA without the retention of the 80-bytes content of RTC registers. Moreover, the series is also equipped with plenty of peripherals, including up to 8 x 40/ COM x SEG LCD panel driver, Timers, PWM, UART, Quad-SPI (QSPI), SPI/ I2S, I2C, Smart Card Interface (ISO 7816-3), SDHC 2.0, USB 2.0 Full-Speed On-The-Go and CAN 2.0B.
NuMicro M2354 Series is an Arm® Cortex®-M23 based IoT Security MCU series. In addition to the TrustZone® feature, the series equips the countermeasures with its hardware crypto accelerators for Power Side-Channel Attacks and mitigation to the fault injection attacks of voltage and clock glitches. Furthermore, it introduces the Platform Security concept of a secure microcontroller platform to provide Debug Port Management, Product Lifecycle Management, Firmware Version Counter, and Secure Key Storage with chip-level tamper-resistant. The overall features can ensure an MCU application system supporting Storage Security, Software Execution Security, and Connectivity Security.
Mbed OS offers a lot of features and benefits for IoT application developers. With support for Mbed OS on a wide range of Cortex-M based devices, free-to-use online compiler, integrated development environment (IDE), developers can quickly prototype IoT high-security applications with device identity authentication on low-cost development boards. Features of the RTOS core-based kernel and released under Apache 2.0 license make the RTOS primitives always available for commercial or personal projects. M2354 series is the first MCU platform to support Mbed OS 6 by Armv8-M TrustZone hardware-enforced isolation technology; thus, developers can make use of reference software from Trusted Firmware-M (TF-M) open source project, multiple drivers support of wireless connectivity and SSL, TLS standards of security protocols for securing communications to develop and deploy massive secure IoT devices. The latest major version also provides a series of example integrations with different cloud services; therefore, devices running with the Mbed OS 6 can meet the needs of IoT device developers by being cloud-agnostic. To ease the endeavor of an IoT security system to be security requirement compliant, Nuvoton provides full TF-M reference source codes as a template for IoT security software development for M2354 powered devices.
Besides Mbed OS, the M2354 series also supports FreeRTOS, RT-Thread for easy implementation of an IoT device and its connection to varied cloud services. With support for multiple OSs on the M2354 series, the NuMicro Cortex-M23 based product portfolio can enhance the security level of many appliances, especially for authentication with IoT service clouds. In addition, the M2354 series can support fast time-to-market with its robust security features for network-connected devices. These devices can be used for smart home appliances, including biometric door locks, secure wireless modules, smart wireless speakers, security systems, smart city appliances including smart meters, green energy control, power station sensors, and other embedded systems with security concerns robotics, arcade machines.
M2354 series has been in mass production with LQFP-128, LQFP-64, and LQFP-48 packages. The NuMaker development boards are also available.
